FreeNAS, DynDNS and port forwarding

Hello

New here so please be kind :)

I have setup a FreeNAS server to serve my files and to take care of backups. I would very much like to access from work too, so I set up a host at DynDNS.com and the FreeNAS server.

The problem is that when I try to access the server, I am shown the configuration of the router! I can't figure what I have done wrong, because it's not specially much options to configure.

I have tried to forward various ports in the router, but everytime the config of the router shows.

I am not experienced with network, so how/where do I check for errors?

Unfortunately, I have no knowledge about your router. I'm guessing you are a former Tele2 customer (now acquired by NextGenTel), and that your router was provided by Tele2?

I have found some documentation on various Tilgin devices, but from what I can see, the web interface does not offer the ability to change this port (which is quite typical), and I find no documentation on any command line interface (for advanced configuration).

While it may still be possible to change the administration interface's port, or at least isolate it to the LAN interface, I do not know how.

The simplest solution for you may be to use a different port, but as said before, this can introduce issues with reaching it from your work because of firewall issues. As RotBlitz suggested, you can try some of the most common ports. 443 is the default SSL port (for https://), so if the NAS device supports HTTPS, you could simply try to use HTTPS instead of HTTP. Assuming that the router doesn't occupy that port as well, of course. =)

Corporate networks usually only allow common browser ports outbound, such like 80, 443 and maybe 21. So, in case you can't change your router's admin port, I suggest trying with port 443 or 21. You must also change the port forwarding rule on the router, and if the router doesn't support port translation, you must get the server to listen on that alternative port. And you must specify the alternative port when e.g. entering the URL into the browser's address line.

Btw, I could not locate a manual for your router in a language I could understand, so can't tell you if you can change the admin interface port.

Edit:
Just seeing: "I can't edit the hostfile either, because it's 'locked' by something else (don't know what)."

Why would you want to edit the hosts file (in case this is what you mean)? If you use Vista/7, you have to edit it from an elevated command (Right-click - Run as Administrator).

Just wanted to inform that suddenly all worked! I just "turn on" all the routers available rules for "servers" and voila :)

Wonderful! Then it sounds like the router automatically avoided conflict with its own HTTP service when you "turned on" those settings on the router, which is quite brilliant.

Thanks for letting us know.

To properly "close" your question, you must choose an "accepted answer". Since you pretty much solved the problem yourself, you may for example choose one of your own answers.

Thank you for your answer, and yes I'm a fellow norwegian :)

My router is a Tilgin 452W, and I just can't figure out how to change the default admin. port (is it possible?).

I have also tried port 8080 among others. The results have just been connection error and/or redirecting to the Tilgin adminpage.

I can't edit the hostfile either, because it's "locked" by something else (don't know what).
