I recently bought a domain and custom dns form dyndns to enable wan file sharing of my time-capsule. Now I have discovered that is not the best idea, I have setup a different router and want to undo all the custom dns settings the dydns tutorials told me to add for the time capsule to update itself. Now I am not sure what to do for my new VPN capable router. It's a Draytek 2830 and has ddns update setup inside where I can add my dyndns account. My free ddns host is working fine, but the custom one I recently bought seems to need some different custom entries and I need help knowing what they should be. I deleted all the time capsule ones and now only have a cname record left in my custom dns settings in the dyndns account.

Updating a hostname in Custom DNS is exactly the same as with a Dynamic DNS hostname. You simply configure your update client to update the hostname in your domain (eg
home.example.com) instead of your free hostname.
the client you are referring to is the inbuilt software in the router?
currently I have:
Host: www.newddnsdomain.com TTL: 43200 Type: CNAME Data: newddnsdomain.com.
with no A records or others.. is this suitable for custom auto updating dns for a router to update itself?
You would, in this case, need to be updating
newddnsdomain.com with your update client.
If that is the hostname you want to update, yes.
Also, I'm not sure what to put in the first part of the host name: when I did this for the apple time capsule it was: time-capsule.newddnsdomain.com but now with a different router it's just: newddnsdomain.com ?
