Basically i'm looking remote access to files (file server) and stream media.

I neglected to say that i'm also running webmin (1.5 ) i believe. and the server version of ubuntu is 8.04 64 bit.

Thanks Cry Havok for help so far and swift reply.

Great info/advice Cry havok. Yeah i've used open vpn before and found it worked well for me, but that was on a different system/server that someone set up for me. This is my first build from scratch. I too am in it, I build base units all day, but my weak point is this type of thing, remote access, networking etc. Thankyou once again very very much. Regards.

Can you apply the tick then so that it's recorded - that's how this forum works. Otherwise this thread will keep being resurrected by the forum bot. TIA

It sounds like you're connected to your server, but have the default pages for your installed web server visible.

To answer your question however we need to know - what do you want to do? Are you trying to connect to a web server, a file share, stream media, what? Some of it will have been answered already when other people asked questions and it may be that the answers to those give you everything you need. If not, feed us more information ;)

Remote access to files - try this thread as well as this and this. Note that if you use a solution that doesn't involve a VPN or SSH then you're potentially exposing all your files to the Internet.

For streaming media see this answer. As mentioned there you need to ensure you have enough upload bandwidth for streaming the media in question. For streaming media I've found Twonky an good solution, though there are plenty of other options.

Finally, if you want remote access to Webmin simply forward the Webmin port, and ensure you're using strong passwords to stop anybody who stumbles across it from having full control of your network ;) I'm personally a fan of using VPNs (I use OpenVPN myself) for any remote access. The biggest advantage of using a VPN is that, if you chose to configure it that way, the fact that you're remote becomes largely transparent and everything that works when you're physically connected will work remotely (subject to bandwidth limitations).
